Weird Owl - Build Your Beast A Fire [2011]

Weird Owl’s Build Your Beast a Fire, finds the New York City five-piece in a similarly altered state of mind as its 2009 debut, Ever the Silver Cord Be Loose, but the band has taken a decidedly different path to get there. With a focus on tighter songwriting and arranging, BYBAF boasts a much more concise and melodic approach to the band’s signature take on the inner-to-outer-space psychedelic continuum. The acid-tinged mysticism of the 13th Floor Elevators that was once channeled through the ragged stomp of Crazy Horse is now given life through a voice closer to the odd clarity of mid-era Pink Floyd mixed with the synthesized textures of The Flaming Lips.

The Company Corvette - End Of The Summers [2011]

This three-piece has been rocking out and about the Philadelphia area for over 4 years, delivering heavy rock that is blues-based, with a healthy dose of psychedelia and a metallic punch. The Company Corvette brings high-energy, riff-driven grooves mixed with laid back vocals and blistering, wah-wah drenched guitar action. Recomended!

Quest for Fire - Lights From Paradise [2010]

Lights From Paradise is easily better than the debut on all fronts. The guitars are still fuzzy and soothing, with a laid back intensity and smooth delivery. The rhythm section still brings that trance inducing thump, and the vocals still have that nasally, David Gilmore on Quaaludes quality to them. This time around, there's the addition of strings and keyboards, and when the vocal harmonies get sugar sweet, they're rotting those teeth inside your eardrums quicker than ever.

Quest for Fire - Quest for Fire [2009]

Toronto’s Quest for Fire conjure up the original root of psychedelia with the raunch, muscle and oscillations of Hawkwind and Comets on Fire, and Pink Floyd’s sensory panorama, all resting on a simplistic, plodding Spacemen 3 thump. Though this is their first LP, the band’s sound comes across fully realized, and despite my weak comparisons above, they possess a signature sound, something a band usually get to once they’re already a couple of records deep. If it sounds like Quest for Fire are just young bucks still cutting their teeth, their pedigree includes some of the most road-seasoned bands to come out of Canada. The line-up includes two ex-members of the Deadly Snakes, a member of the recently defunct Cursed and a member of No No Zero. Listening to Quest for Fire’s laid-back, reverb-laden psych, it’s nearly impossible to trace this lineage back to their garage rock and hardcore days, and Quest for Fire wouldn’t have it any other way.

Wooden Shjips - West [2011]

There’s the real world and then there’s Wooden Shjips’ world. A land where a few extra “j”s never hurt anybody–in Wooden Shjips’ world, it’s always July, just slightly after sunset, on a Californian beach road. Seventy-five, slight breeze, and the acid is never brown.

This album is full of heady, trippy, hypnotic psychedelia, the kind that gradually lifts you up and off into the cosmos of your mind. The songs – best described as a cross between '60's hippie jams and classic Kraut rock – wander repetitively but never aimlessly, with swirls of guitar that roar at you from the netherworld before retreating back. It's good music for staring at a haze of smoke and finding all the visions within. My advice: accept Wooden Shjips' invitation, tune in, and blaze out.

Jeremy Irons & the Ratgang Malibus - Bloom [2011]

The grand return of the krautrock, and other similar musical pharmaceuticals, have yet again entrenched itself in many peoples ears. It is music with a retrospective way of thinking that takes its listeners on adventurous excursions deep into one's mind. Music that aims to broaden your horizon and consciousness. JI&TRM will make an impact on you in the same way with their album Bloom an innovative and highly personal take on the psychedelic rock and the very use of its many components and elements. As the indicating seriousness of the first line of the opening track reveals... "It's not a joke this time. I'm leaving reality for sure.
